Usage of Cystaran

Cystaran works by reducing the amount of cystine (an amino acid) in the body.

Cystaran is used in people with cystinosis (SIS-tin-OH-sis), a rare genetic condition that causes a build-up of cystine in the kidneys and other organs, including the eyes. Too much cystine can cause kidney failure or other medical problems.

Cystaran eye drops are used to keep cystine crystals from building up in the cornea (surface of the eye).

Cystaran side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Cystaran eye drops: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

increased pressure inside the skull - severe headaches, ringing in your ears, dizziness, nausea, vision problems, pain behind your eyes.

Common Cystaran side effects may include:

eye pain, redness, itching, or irritation;

vision problems;

headache; or

increased sensitivity to light.

Before taking Cystaran

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Cystaran is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.

How to use Cystaran

Usual Adult Dose for Corneal Cystine Crystal Accumulation:

Instill one drop in each eye every waking hour; discard after 1 week of use. Use: Treatment of corneal cystine crystal accumulation in patients with cystinosis.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Corneal Cystine Crystal Accumulation:

Instill one drop in each eye every waking hour; discard after 1 week of use. Use: Treatment of corneal cystine crystal accumulation in patients with cystinosis.

Warnings

Contact lenses should be removed before using Cystaran eye drops. The lenses may be reinserted 15 minutes following the use of the drops.

Do not to touch the eyelid or surrounding areas with the dropper tip of the bottle. The cap should remain on the bottle when not in use.

Cystaran eye drops should be stored in the freezer in the original carton. The bottle should be allowed to thaw completely (for approximately 24 hours) before use.

Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.

What other drugs will affect Cystaran

Medicine used in the eyes is not likely to be affected by other drugs you use. But many drugs can interact. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
