Usage of Docosanol topical

Docosanol topical (for the skin) is used to treat cold sores on the face and lips.

Docosanol may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Docosanol topical side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; feeling light-headed; wheezing, difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Less serious side effects may be more likely, and you may have none at all.

Before taking Docosanol topical

You should not use docosanol topical if you are allergic to it.

How to use Docosanol topical

Usual Adult Dose for Herpes Simplex:

Apply to affected area on face or lips 5 times a day beginning at the first sign of cold sore or fever blister (i.e., tingling)Use: For the treatment of cold sores or fever blisters on the face or lips

Usual Pediatric Dose for Herpes Simplex:

12 years or older: Apply to affected area on face or lips 5 times a day beginning at the first sign of cold sore or fever blister (i.e., tingling)Use: For the treatment of cold sores or fever blisters on the face or lips
