Usage of Hyoscyamine and phenyltoloxamine

Hyoscyamine and phenyltoloxamine is a combination medicine that is used to treat indigestion (upset stomach, gas, bloating), and to reduce stomach acid.

Hyoscyamine and phenyltoloxamine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Hyoscyamine and phenyltoloxamine side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Hyoscyamine and phenyltoloxamine may cause serious side effects. Stop using hyoscyamine and phenyltoloxamine and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest;
  • severe stomach cramps or constipation;
  • little or no urination;
  • confusion, memory problems, slurred speech;
  • diarrhea; or
  • problems with balance or muscle movement.
  • Side effects such as dry mouth, constipation, and confusion may be more likely in older adults.

    Common side effects of hyoscyamine and phenyltoloxamine may include:

  • dizziness, drowsiness;
  • constipation;
  • decreased sweating, decreased urination;
  • dry mouth;
  • blurred vision; or
  • impotence, loss of interest in sex, or trouble having an orgasm.

    You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to hyoscyamine or phenyltoloxamine, or if:

  • You may not be able to take this medicine if you have untreated or uncontrolled diseases such as glaucoma, asthma, heart disease, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, or a thyroid disorder.

    Tell your doctor if you have or have had:

  • a bladder obstruction or other urination problems;
  • an enlarged prostate;
  • ulcerative colitis;
  • glaucoma;
  • myasthenia gravis;
  • liver or kidney disease;
  • heart problems; or
  • breathing problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

    Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice.

    What other drugs will affect Hyoscyamine and phenyltoloxamine

    Using hyoscyamine and phenyltoloxamine with other drugs that make you drowsy can worsen this effect. Ask your doctor before using opioid medication, a sleeping pill, a muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety or seizures.

    Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially:

  • medicine to treat depression, anxiety, mood disorders, or mental illness;
  • cold or allergy medicine (Benadryl and others);
  • medicine to treat Parkinson's disease;
  • medicine to treat stomach problems, motion sickness, or irritable bowel syndrome;
  • medicine to treat overactive bladder; or
  • bronchodilator asthma medication.
