  • Pharmacology

cephalexin is a semi -synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic, which has bactericidal effects by inhibiting synthesis of bacterial cells.

cephalexin is sustainable with the act of penicillinase of staphylococcus, so the impact on Staphylococcus aureus is not sensitive to penicillin. Cephalexin has the effect of printing Vitro on the following bacteria: Streptococcus beta hemolysis; Staphylococcus, including coagulase strains (+), coagulase (-) and penicillinase; Streptococcus Pneumoniae, some Escherichia Coli; Proteus Mirabilis, some Klebsiella spp., Branhamella Catnrhalis; Shigella. Cephalexin is also active in most E. coli that has resisted ampicillin.

    pharmacokinetics

    absorption:

Cephalexin is completely absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and reaches the peak concentration of plasma around 9 and 18μg/ml after 1 hour with the corresponding dose of 250 and 500mg respectively; Double dose reaches double peak concentration. Drinking Cephalexin and food can slow down but the total amount of drugs absorb does not change. Up to 15% of the drug is associated with plasma proteins. The half -life of the drug in plasma is about 1 hour, increasing when the kidney function decreases.

    Distribution:

cephalexin is widely distributed throughout the body but the amount in cerebrospinal fluid is negligible. Cephalexin passes the placenta and excreted breast milk with low concentrations.

    Metabolism:

    Cephalexin is not metabolized.

    Era:

About 80% of the dosage of excretion through urine in the form of unchanged in the first 6 hours through glomerular filtration and excretion in the renal tubules.

    Be cautious when used

cephalexin is often well tolerated even patients with penicillin allergies, but there are also very few cross -allergies.

Using long -term cephalexin can cause excessive growth of uncertainty bacteria, in this case should stop the drug.

Like with antibiotics eliminated mainly through the kidneys, when renal failure, the dose of cephalexin must be reduced.

Pay attention to the diagnosis of fake colitis in patients with severe diarrhea during or after antibiotics.

The ability to drive and operate machinery

Caution when driving or operating machinery because the drug can cause unwanted effects such as headache, dizziness, fatigue.

    Pregnancy

Precautions when using cephalexin for pregnant women.

    breastfeeding period

Precautions when using cephalexin for nursing women.

    Drug interaction

Because cephalosporin antibiotics such as cephalexin only act on proliferative bacteria, should not combine them with bactericidal antibiotics.

When combined with strong diuretic (ethacrynic acid, Furosemide) or antibiotics with kidney toxicity (aminoglycoside, polymyxin, colistin), cephalexin may cause more kidney toxicity.

Probenecid increases serum concentration and semi -waste time of cephalexin.

As other broad -spectrum antibiotics, cephalexin reduces the effects of contraceptives containing estrogen.
