Excess iron

Excess iron's disease overview

What is

What is excess iron?

iron is an important element in the human body, especially with the production of red blood cells. iron excess disease is a disorder related to the problem of iron accumulated too much in the body. Specifically, the phenomenon of intestines loses the ability to regulate the amount of iron in the body leading to excess iron in organs such as liver, heart, pancreas and damage these organs.

Iron excess disease is divided into two types:

  • Excessive iron: Due to genetics from home
  • secondary iron excess: Due to other diseases such as anemia, liver disease or a lot of blood transfusion.

    Causes of Excess iron's disease

  • Excess iron disease is caused by gene mutation that controls the amount of iron that the body has absorbed and this mutation is inherited from parents to children. The common type of mutation is the HFE gene mutation including C282Y and H63D.
  • Cases of iron poisoning can be caused by iron overdose due to excessive iron. Or maybe due to a large number of blood transfusion also causes excess iron. Patients with chronic hepatitis C or alcoholism also suffer from this disease.

    Symptoms of Excess iron's disease

Symptoms of excess iron include early symptoms and late symptoms:

    Early symptoms of excess iron:
  • Fatigue, weak people.
  • body weakness, weight loss.
  • Dark skin or copper color.
  • joint pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • late symptoms of excess iron:

    diabetes

  • Heart failure
  • Symptoms of excess iron rarely appear until growing up, especially in the age of 50-60 in men and after 60 in women.

People at risk for Excess iron's disease

The risk object is likely to have excess iron:

  • People have 2 copies of the HFE gene.
  • Family history of people with excess iron.
  • Bac An's original people have a high rate of iron due to genetics.
  • Men are more likely to get disease than women of young age.

    Prevention of Excess iron's disease

To prevent excess iron, it is necessary to follow the following diet:

  • Because iron is not a substance you want to put into the body as much as possible, patients who have liver disease and cardiovascular disease should limit the use of foods containing iron like iron like : Cereals, beans, spinach, sesame seeds, red meat ...
  • In addition, these patients should not supplement iron or vitamin C daily.

  • Patients with liver damage should not use alcoholic drinks. Instead, combine products to prevent iron absorption such as milk, cheese, yogurt, tea ...
  • Should eat lots of green vegetables and fruits high in fiber to reduce iron absorption.
  • Diagnostic measures for Excess iron's disease

To diagnose excess iron, the following tests and techniques are often done to strengthen the diagnosis:

  • Serum saturation test in serum: Used to measure iron associated with iron protein in the blood. The results greater than 45% are classified as high.
  • Ferritin test in serum: used to measure the amount of iron in the liver. This test is indicated after knowing the results of the transferrin saturation test in serum is higher than the normal value.
  • Liver function test to check liver damage.

magnetic resonance imaging to determine the level of overload of iron in the liver.

  • Genetic mutation test: Find mutations HFE if the amount of iron in the blood is high.
  • Liver biopsy: Take samples from the liver to test the liver damage evaluation.

    Excess iron's disease treatments

To treat excess iron , the following methods are now implemented as popular as:

    Blood takes:
  • Bloody, also known as iron discharge method, is continuously performed, considered as a safe and effective treatment for excess iron. >
  • Initially, the patient was taken about 470ml of blood, taking one or two times a week.
  • After that, when the patient's iron concentration returned to the normal rate, the blood taken is done less often, about two to four months or not monthly or not monthly or not. Must spread iron again.
  • Medical treatment with drugs:

The drugs are used to prevent diseases such as liver, heart disease and diabetes.Venous opening procedure:

Applied when the patient had liver disease, heart disease and diabetes.
