What is the difference between Xelpros and Xalatan?
The Xelpros brand of latanoprost eye drops does not contain the preservative benzalkonium chloride (BAK), but the Xalatan brand does. Instead, Xelpros uses potassium sorbate as a preservative. If you prefer no preservative, Iyuzeh was approved in Dec. 2022 as the first preservative-free formulation of latanoprost.
What is latanoprost?
How fast does it work?
Elevated IOP is a major risk factor for optic nerve damage and vision loss in glaucoma The reduction in IOP begins about about 3 to 4 hours after instilling latanoprost drops, the maximum effect is reached at 8 to 12 hours, and reduction in IOP lasts for at least 24 hours.
Does benzalkonium chloride affect contacts?
Yes, benzalkonium chloride can be absorbed and may change the color of your contacts. Studies have shown that eye drops containing BAK can also cause allergic reactions, dry eye, eye redness, and other side effects in some patients.
The manufacturers of Xelpros, Xalatan and Iyuzeh each recommend that you remove your contact lenses prior to the instillation of the eye drops, even though only Xalatan contains benzalkonium chloride. Your contact lenses may be reinserted 15 minutes after use.
