    Editor's take

Hims Hard Mints are a discreet alternative to erectile dysfunction pills. They’re created by a process called compounding. Compounded medications are customized or altered to meet a specific need (in this case, making a pill into a chewable medication). While compounded medications like this one use ingredients that are FDA-approved in other medications, this specific product isn’t FDA-approved.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition, and many people find that it is treatable with Viagra — sometimes called the “little blue pill” — and its generic form, sildenafil.

Several telehealth companies, such as Hims, Roman, Lemonaid, and Optum Perks, have doctors and other licensed medical professionals on hand to prescribe Viagra online.

Hims is a telehealth company that makes both online prescriptions and over-the-counter generic and brand-name medications available online. The brand focuses mainly on five medications, including brand-name and generic Viagra, that have received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval.

The first step is a consultation with an online qualified medical professional who will make a diagnosis and prescribe the best ED treatment for you. They’ll also answer any questions you have, and you can contact them in the future to discuss and make treatment adjustments.

If you’re prescribed Viagra, you can purchase it in doses of 25, 50, or 100 milligrams (mg). Hims recommends taking Viagra anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours before sexual activity. You can make a one-time order or sign up for a subscription plan that sends you a monthly supply of the pills in discreet packaging.

Cost: Branded Viagra is available starting at $139 per dose. Generic Viagra is also available through Hims starting at $4 per dose.

    What our tester says

Our tester Aaron* had positive thoughts about the Hims website: “It’s very intuitive, with numerous directional and navigational elements that were very clear about what health issue I could address by selecting different options, and the [writing] across the website is very easy to read and spot.”

However, when using the mobile version of the site, Aaron mentioned that “I found that the [text] could be difficult to read in its entirety when long paragraphs were cut off or content couldn’t all fit together on a single page.

“This became an issue when I needed to make selections during my initial consultation request questionnaire and was worried that I’d accidentally select an option (which automatically makes you go to the next question) while scrolling down to view all of my response options.”

After a lengthy questionnaire, our tester was recommended Hims Hard Mints tadalafil (generic for Cialis). He noted that the questionnaire felt very long and didn’t indicate how many questions he’d have to answer, which almost made Aaron abandon the questionnaire after about 10 to 15 questions.

And although our tester found Hims easy to use and intuitive, Aaron felt that the website was large and prominent. Since he was shopping on the Hims site on his mobile phone in public, he felt somewhat uncomfortable that someone might see what he was browsing from a distance and kept his back to a wall.

Aaron also felt a little anxious about using Hard Mints. Although he knows that tadalafil (Cialis) is an FDA-approved medication, Hard Mints themselves are not FDA approved and he worries that they might trigger allergies or interactions with his other medications.

    What our tester says

    Rex hands on review images

Our tester Aaron was pleasantly surprised by his overall experience on the Rex MD site.

His first impressions weren’t promising: “The initial landing page felt like the sort of traditional ED site that pushes product on you with very obvious and overwhelming discounts, badges, and promises that feel inauthentic, like picking up an ED supplement at a gas station,” Aaron said.

But as Aaron began filling out the standard questionnaire to determine which product would be recommended, he appreciated the thoroughness of the questionnaire and the amount of detail he was asked to provide for several questions, including what medications he currently takes.

Aaron felt more comfortable sharing his email and personal information with Rex MD, as the requests to create an account were timed more logically with the flow of the questionnaire. “I felt that they truly wanted to learn about my needs before gathering a lot of information from me.”

He did feel a disappointed when asked to provide information about his gender.

“Sure, these website are primarily targeted at people born male with penises, but it felt out of touch with the rest of the questionnaire to have such a specific question aimed at gathering gender information,” said Aaron.

“Gender shouldn’t really matter if you have a penis and you just want help with it, especially when you’re sharing deeply personal information that a company will maintain records on in perpetuity.”

    What our tester says

    Roman hands on review images

Aaron did not feel very positive about his experience with the Roman site. He noted right away that the site prescribed several recommended products before directing him to fill out any questionnaires or go through any comprehensive medical assessment.

“I found the immediate impression I got from the site to be kind of ‘sales pitch-y” and more focused on pushing products rather than addressing your health needs.” At the time of this review, Aaron felt uncomfortable exploring products like gummies or mints, as he discovered these are typically not FDA approved.

“I also found it more difficult than I expected to begin my questionnaire,” Aaron said. He noted that the main call-to-action for the medical questionnaire was hidden under the several products that Roman was pushing at the top of the page.

Aaron was also surprised by the way that the questionnaire flowed once he got started. After only a few questions, Aaron was asked to enter his email address and create a password in order to proceed with the questionnaire. This also included a requirement to agree to the site’s terms and privacy policy as well as a coupon for $15 off his purchase.

“Although I appreciated the request to share my information and investigate the company’s policies early on, I also found it very discomforting to have to share my personal information and set up an account while also being bribed with a coupon before I could even explore the products that Roman had to offer.

“Privacy is very important to me when I vet a site for ED, so I found it difficult to justify moving forward sharing my email before I could fully vet the site, and found the coupon very off-putting.” Aaron did not continue with the questionnaire and abandoned the Roman site before completing the questionnaire.

Lemonaid is a telehealth medicine service that connects people with healthcare professionals. It offers highly competitive online pharmacy pricing.

After you select the condition you want treatment for, Lemonaid asks you to complete an online assessment to decide if you’re a good candidate for certain medications.

You’ll then need to pay a $25 flat fee for a consultation with a licensed online provider who may choose to prescribe you treatment for your ED and will send your prescription to the company’s online pharmacy.

While Lemonaid says that its pharmacies stock branded Viagra, its website goes into much more detail about the 20-mg sildenafil pills that provide many of the same benefits that Viagra can for a lower cost.

Cost: If the price for branded Viagra pill is outside of your budget, Lemonaid’s $2 sildenafil pills are some of the lowest priced Viagra alternatives that we’ve found.

    What our tester says

Our tester Aaron* was immediately impressed by the subtlety and elegance of the Lemonaid website.

“The Lemonaid website is pretty easy to use and has a more elegant, premium feel than the more casual feel of other sites, such as Hims,” he said.

But Aaron notes the challenges of getting started on the site: “It was a little difficult to find what I was looking for due to the size of the font and the somewhat chaotic page design, as many pages contained a large amount of text, interactive elements like boxes filled with text, and contrasting colors that made the pages a little overwhelming at times.”

He also noted the drastic increase in cost of many of the same ED medications that competitors offer. “A single dose is almost double the cost on Lemonaid as it is on Hims (e.g., $3 per use versus $1.07 per use),” he said.

After a lengthy questionnaire, he was recommended sildenafil (generic Viagra). Although the consultation questionnaire was long, “The questionnaire shows how much progress you’ve made until you complete 100% of the questionnaire so that you don’t get stressed out by the sheer number of questions.”

However, Aaron did encounter a privacy concern during the checkout process.

“I was asked for permission to use my device camera when I was nearly done with the checkout process, which made me very uncomfortable. Given the recent data leak from parent company 23andMe, this almost made me turn around and decide not to buy the product after all, especially given the sensitivity of the product.”

How we chose the best online pharmacies for buying Viagra

We chose the following telehealth brands based on user ratings, discretion, and our product selection guidelines. This includes verifying Hims, Roman, Lemonaid, REX MD, and Optum Perks claims that a doctor or other qualified or licensed medical professional is involved in determining the appropriateness of the prescribed medication available online.

This allows us to give you strong recommendations for online prescriptions that offer good value for your money.

We also ensure that sponsors and business partners never influence our content.

In addition, we review BBB ratings (where applicable) and check to make sure none of these brands have FDA warning letters.

    How common is erectile dysfunction?

ED is very common. In the United States alone, researchers estimate around 30 million men have the condition.

ED is defined as the inability to develop and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity or penetrative sex. Changes in some lifestyle habits, such as activity levels and nutrition, can make a positive difference, as well as the use of medications in some cases.

What are the side effects and risks of Viagra?

Taking Viagra can cause mild or serious side effects. Mild effects may go away in a few days or a couple of weeks. These side effects can include:

  • headache
  • flushing
  • indigestion
  • stuffy nose
  • back pain
  • muscle pain
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • rash
  • If these side effects persist after a week or so, talk with your prescribing healthcare professional or pharmacist.

Serious side effects are uncommon but may occur. Call your prescribing healthcare professional right away if you experience serious side effects, such as:

  • sudden vision loss in one eye
  • sudden decrease or loss of hearing
  • allergic reaction (hives, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue)
  • priapism (painful and persistent erection lasting more than 4 hours)
  • low blood pressure
  • fast heart rate
  • How does buying Viagra online work? Our tips for online ordering

  • Have an accurate diagnosis and prescription: Remember that generic Viagra and generic sildenafil are not available over the counter — you’ll need a prescription. Some companies even offer an online appointment that connect you with an online provider who can assess your symptoms and make an accurate ED diagnosis before your purchase.
  • Use a licensed pharmacy to avoid counterfeit medications: Oral medications for ED are among the most counterfeited medications in the world. Online pharmacies can sell counterfeit medications, so it’s important to do your research before you buy from any retailer.
  • Buy from an online pharmacy operating in the country and state you live in: In 2014, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy found that 97% of the internet pharmacies it examined were not compliant with federal laws, state laws, or industry standards.
  • What to look for when buying Viagra online

To avoid buying counterfeit medications, look for the following:

  • reputable retailer
  • consultation with a licensed medical professional
  • licensed pharmacy that asks for an online prescription from your doctor
  • licensed pharmacy with an address in the United States
  • FDA-approved medications
  • clearly labeled containers with the name of the medication and dosage
  • licensed pharmacist who is available to answer any questions afterward
  • What makes a reputable online pharmacy or health platform?

There should be multiple, clear ways to contact a customer service representative, such as a pop-up chat window, an email to send questions, a contact form you can submit, or a phone number you can call.

The online pharmacy may have a medical advisory board and a network of licensed healthcare professionals.

When to talk with a doctor about ED symptoms

If you’re interested in trying Viagra for ED, you’ll need to talk with a healthcare professional first. They will be able to determine whether you’re a good candidate for Viagra, and if so, they can write a prescription.

It’s important to share your medical history and any medications that you’re taking because Viagra can have very severe side effects if taken alongside certain other medications like nitrates. The FDA does require a prescription for Viagra, both for the brand-name medication and its generic version, sildenafil.

Your doctor may prescribe Viagra if they decide it’s the safest treatment option based on your symptoms, medical history, and overall health. There are also other options they can talk with you about.

If you experience a painful erection or an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours, get emergency care immediately, as it may be a sign of another urologic condition.

It’s also important to get immediate medical assistance if you experience any of these serious side effects:

  • allergic reaction, such as skin rash, itching or hives, and swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain
  • fast, irregular heart rate
  • hearing loss
  • vision changes
  • seizures
