“I tested this product once a day for 3 days. Almost immediately, I noticed the relaxing effects of the CBD oil. It noticeably reduced the stress I was feeling and made me feel ready for bed. I loved this product because it worked faster than others I’ve tried (like CBD gummies and capsules). Overall, this product gets a thumbs-up from me.”
— Sydney Samuels, director
Alongside CBD gummies, CBD oils and tinctures are some of the most common forms of CBD you’ll find as you shop. When taken sublingually (let to sit under the tongue), CBD oils may also be more effective.
“If sublinguals are applied and absorbed correctly, then the bioavailability can be greater,” explains Dominique Fontaine, BSN, RN, HNB-BC, HWNC-BC, integrative nurse specialist.
She explains that this is because the oral mucosa absorbs the CBD and it avoids traveling through the stomach and liver. Your gastrointestinal system will break down capsules and gummies before they hit your bloodstream, and depending on your unique digestive system, this can decrease bioavailability from a range of roughly 20% to 30% to 6% to 30%.
So, CBD oils show more promise if you’re not having luck with gummies. But not all brands are reliable.
Our medical standards team has evaluated more than 450 CBD oils and tinctures, making sure lab testing results are current, heavy metals and pesticides are not detected, and THC does not exceed allowable limits. Our team also fact-checks health claims against the most current research.
Now for the fun part: Once the brands pass this initial vetting, we try the CBD oils to provide feedback on taste, experience, and effects. To date, we’ve tested almost 30 CBD oils.
Here are the best CBD oils our team recommends after vetting and testing.

Cornbread Hemp Distilled CBD Oil
4.4 (352+) from Cornbread HempUse code “HEALTHLINE” for 30% off.
SHOP NOW AT CORNBREAD HEMPHealthline's review
Cornbread Hemp’s full-spectrum CBD oil is USDA certified organic and provides about 50 milligrams (mg) of CBD per serving. The formula is unflavored and contains no preservatives. We’ve found it helps with relaxing at the end of the day and calming down during stressful periods to be more focused and productive.
One tester especially appreciated that it didn’t make her feel drowsy, making it ideal to use during the daytime when you’re searching for a more relaxed state without feeling like you need a nap.
Another tester also used it during the day to calm daily stressors, as well as anxiety before bed. She found it helped produce a sense of calm that allowed her to relax. It indirectly helped her get to sleep by calming anxious thoughts that tend to strike right as she wants to sleep.
One tester reported a hemp-like taste, so if you prefer flavor to mask that, you may not love it. That said, our second tester felt it was mild compared with others she has tried in the past.
In addition to the higher potency 1,500-mg option, the oil is also available in 375-mg and 750-mg potencies that offer 25 mg of CBD per serving.
What our tester says
“I tested Cornbread’s 50 mg CBD/1 mg THC, Distilled CBD Oil over 3 consecutive days as well as off-and-on over the course of a few months.
“I’d recommend this for people who are OK with having a small amount of THC and may be looking for a formula that doesn’t make them drowsy. Obviously, every person is different, so there is no guarantee that someone won’t get drowsy.
“I just know that I do tend to get sleepy after taking CBD, and I don’t with this one. The version I tried has 50 mg CBD and 1 mg THC per full dropper (1 milliliter [mL]).
“I found the Distilled CBD Oil had a relaxing effect without making me drowsy.”
— Candice Abellon, Healthline editor
“I used it before bed to help with sleeping, but mostly used for underlying anxiety and stress I experience before bed but also throughout the day. So I also used it in the mornings before the workday.
“I’ve had quite a few CBD oils in my time and this one had the most subtle taste, I almost didn’t taste it at all. Some oils have a strong or very potent ‘hemp-like’ taste, but this CBD oil was fairly smooth in my opinion. It had a very neutral scent — nothing strong that I noticed.
“The product worked best for me compared with other oils I’ve tried! It had a noticeable and very physical calming effect and helped reduce that anxiety-inducing pit in your stomach that allowed me to be more productive throughout the day, and also relax for bed at night. I also noticed that it took effect pretty quickly, but it did seem to still be a gradual effect, which was good.
“I would say it’s great for anyone experiencing any stress or anxiety that is preventing them from focusing throughout the workday, preventing them from sleeping, or isn’t able to get any kind of anxiety medication for whatever reason.
“I usually pay $60 to $70 for the same size CBD oil bottle, so want to emphasize that their price feels pretty affordable to me, relatively speaking.”

Best tasteless
Medterra Daily Relief CBD Oil
4.4 (3.3k+) from MedterraUse code “health20” for 20% off.
SHOP NOW AT MEDTERRAHealthline's review
Medterra‘s isolate oil is made with two ingredients: unflavored CBD isolate and MCT oil. Potencies range from 500 mg to 6,000 mg. This is a great option for anyone who would like to avoid THC altogether.
Our CBD super tester was impressed that it was truly tasteless (something she has not often experienced in her extensive CBD testing), so she could enjoy it in her coffee and other beverages.
Keep in mind that it does contain coconut MCT oil, which could cause issues if you have a coconut allergy.
What our tester says
“This is my favorite unflavored CBD isolate oil. There is no hint of hempy flavors or aftertaste. It can easily be added to a beverage of your choice or taken on its own.
“I prefer the 1,000-mg bottle (33 mg CBD per 1-mL dropper). After taking this oil, I noticed that I felt more relaxed and had fewer racing thoughts. My body seemed to be less tense, too.”

Like our Medterra pick above, this CBD oil is unflavored. However, it’s a full-spectrum oil instead of an isolate, so it will contain other cannabinoids and plant compounds and maybe some THC.
Because it’s full spectrum, we’ve also found it has some of the herbal, earthy taste that comes natural to CBD. However, we tested the highest potency (5,000 mg per bottle), which could explain why. It was very effective for helping our tester fall asleep.
The lower potency may have less of an earthy taste. Or if you are more keen on added flavor, Joy Organics Full Spectrum Oil in Tropical is our pick.
CBDistillery products are made using U.S. Hemp Authority certified, non-GMO hemp grown in the United States.
What our tester says
“Its aftertaste wasn’t overly heavy, nor did it linger for longer than a minute (especially when taken under the tongue). The oil has the earthy, herbal scent typical of CBD products.
“This is CBDistillery’s strongest oil (5,000 mg in a 1-ounce bottle), so one dropperful was very effective for me! I generally take a 50-mg CBD gummy for sleep most nights and substituted this in its place. Within 10 to 20 minutes of taking one serving orally (even with scrolling on my phone in bed), I found my eyes getting extremely heavy and my entire body relaxing.
“I was able to fall asleep consistently with this product. I think it probably worked better than I needed it to. I’ll probably save the rest of the bottle for particularly anxious nights.”

Best high potency
Aspen Green Organic Full Spectrum CBD Oil, Extra Strength
4.98 (78+) from Aspen GreenUse code “HEALTHLINE” for 20% off.
SHOP NOW AT ASPEN GREENHealthline's review
This full-spectrum CBD oil by Aspen Green is certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It’s sold in Original, Citrus, and Mint flavors. We found the Citrus and Mint to be most enjoyable and the Original unflavored to be a bit bitter, given that it’s such a potent CBD oil.
It was our former top pick, but because it is so strong, it may not be for everyone — especially beginners. If that’s you, our new best overall pick by Cornbread Hemp may be a better place to start.
If you’re OK with a high potency oil and want flavor, we also recommend Aspen Green’s Bliss Oil and have found it helpful for getting to sleep and calming stress.
What our tester says
“I took this oil before bed for a few weeks and discovered that the strong potency worked effectively to help me drift off to sleep (and not wake up until the morning). There is a strong hempy flavor that remains in all three flavors, so keep that in mind.
“After trying both the Mint and Citrus flavors of this CBD oil, I’d say I prefer both of those flavors to the Original one. The hemp flavor is simply so strong and hangs around after ingesting the CBD.
“The CBD itself is wonderful, relaxing, and helps the muscles in my body release from being so tense. So it’s really a matter of flavor preference for the user. I recommend Aspen Green for beginners and would follow the dosing day by day to go low and slow and work up to a larger dose. It can be quite potent and certainly worth the money you will spend on it.”

Joy Organics Full Spectrum CBD Oil, Tropical

SHOP NOW AT JOY ORGANICSHealthline's review
Joy Organics CBD oil is also certified organic and made with hemp from U.S. farms. This Tropical flavor is meant to evoke vacation vibes and has a pineapple coconut taste. Our tester found that it tastes like sweet coconut oil.
She didn’t find it super effective for sleeping better, but it did help her feel more relaxed when taking it during the day without any drowsy effects. So it may be an ideal CBD oil for daytime stress and focus.
If you’re looking for something flavored but with more potency, Aspen Green’s Bliss Oil is worth trying.
This full-spectrum product is available in multiple strengths and contains organic MCT and sunflower oil in addition to CBD. There’s a caution for allergies, as MCT oil contains coconut. Aside from CBD oils, the company also sells topicals, gummies, softgels, and more.
What our tester says
“It tasted like coconut oil — the kind of coconut oil you might cook with. It smelled sweet, a bit like bubblegum.
“Physically, I felt relaxed but alert in the hours after taking some of the oil. It didn’t make me drowsier any more or earlier than usual or have an effect on sleeping overnight. The days that I took the oil coincided with nights that I felt very awake; I’m not sure if the oil had that effect.
“I took a half-dropper (0.5 mL) amount of the oil in the evening for 2 or 3 nights in a row. Then I tried 1 mL for a couple of evenings. On the days that I tested, I didn’t have any other CBD products or alcohol.
“With a half mL, which is half of a serving size, I didn’t become any more drowsy or feel sleepy sooner than I might normally. After those 3 days, I took a break and didn’t have any CBD. Then I had 1 mL and found I did feel a bit drowsy or relaxed in a way that I might have expected.”

Best broad-spectrum
cbdMD Broad Spectrum CBD Oil
4.5 (284+) from cbdMDHealthline's review
The CBD oil tincture from cbdMD is a great gluten-free option. It’s also vegan. Available in two sizes and six concentrations, this CBD oil gives customers the option to tailor their purchase to their exact needs.
In our original testing back in 2022, our tester found it was helpful for relieving anxiety and tension, and it made her feel sleepy. When we retested in 2024, we still found it was effective for getting to sleep.
Our tester particularly appreciated that it was broad spectrum, so it was less intense than stronger CBD oils she uses for sleep and more ideal for when she wanted to relax with more of a slow burn.
This oil is created with MCT oil. MCT oil contains coconut, so take caution for allergies. It’s available in Orange, Berry, and Natural (unflavored). The Berry had some hemp taste, but not grassy or intense.
What our tester says
“The berry taste is quite pleasant! I noticed a strawberry-blueberry taste. The product tasted like berry mixed with a hempy sort of taste. Not grassy, like some CBD products. I don’t mind a hempy taste, but for users who might want to avoid that, this oil is not for them.
“I took 50 mg every night before bed for 3 weeks. I also had a few nights where I took 100 mg to see if I noticed any difference. I found that 50 mg was plenty to help me fall asleep and noticed no additional benefits from taking 100 mg.
“I like that the product is broad spectrum, so only traces of THC and no psychoactive effects. I have found that some higher dose CBD oils that are full spectrum can lead to psychoactive effects (I am quite sensitive to THC, so even 2 mg THC may cause physical effects). Despite liking THC, I don’t always want to feel those types of effects, so I prefer the broad spectrum oil for bedtime since it relaxes me.
“I felt the effects about 30 to 40 minutes in. That’s about standard for when I take a CBD oil. I’d say the effects are mild, but in a gentle way — not an ineffective way. [It] was a sort of slow burn, a gentle drifting off effect.”
— Christy Snyder, Healthline Editor
“I’ve found this oil useful on days when my anxiety rears up. It helps relax some of the tension I hold in my shoulders. But it does make me pretty sleepy, so I only take it before bed.”
— Corie Osborn, former Healthline editor

Best if you want a large bottle
Lazarus Naturals Full Spectrum CBD Tincture
4 (611+) from Lazarus NaturalsHealthline's review
Lazarus Naturals CBD oil is made from hemp grown in Oregon. The company has a high level of transparency regarding the sourcing, manufacturing, and third-party testing of its products.
In our testing, we found it useful for getting to sleep and for focusing during the day in smaller doses.
It’s one of the few CBD oils we’ve found that offers a 120-mL bottle. If you’re prepared to buy in bulk, it’s a good bang for buck.
What our tester says
“I started with the brand’s recommended dose for beginners (50 mg), though found that 100 mg of their full-spectrum, high potency CBD oil was the sweet spot for me to allow me to fall asleep quickly. You don’t notice the oily texture when you take it sublingually, and it absorbs fairly quickly, which also means the earthy taste/smell dissipates fairly quickly.
“I was able to drift off quickly when I took the CBD and didn’t wake up groggy the next morning. Taking it in smaller doses during the day also helped me stop jumping from worry to worry, but focus on the one task in front of me.
“I also tried Lazarus’s Chocolate Mint full-spectrum, high potency CBD tincture, which had the same positive effects, though tasted slightly better than the unflavored.”
